Late summer is a unique season in Chinese Medicine. There is an ebb and flow to each season, in relation to nature and our bodies.
Late summer is related to the earth element and the spleen channel. Taking care of ourselves during this unique season can set us up for a healthier fall and winter. It is a time to build community, spending time outdoors with family and friends. It is time to nourish both connection and ourselves. Disharmony within our earth element can create not only digestive disturbances but excessive worry and overthinking. When our spleen is strong, we have clear thoughts and focus.
The morning time, between 7-11am, is the time of the spleen and stomach. This is the ideal time to eat a good nutritious breakfast. If you are not hungry during this time, there may be other dietary habits that need addressed. It is also the best time to get a workout in, whether its a walk in the park or a yoga class.
We can enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmers markets, like squash, berries, melons, leafy greens, along with rice, oats, and seaweeds. Orange and yellow foods are great to focus on.
Late summer is a great time to get an acupuncture tune up, try some cupping and start a good herbal formula routine to carry you into the cooler months.
